phrz

random sample generator for music and beats

phrz pulls public-domain (cc0) sounds at random — or takes your own. then it chops them, places the pieces at random, and keeps them in key, so you get a phrase to build a beat on. press new phrase and you get another one.

why a random sample generator for music?

digging for samples takes time, and you tend to reach for the same kind of sound.

a random draw brings in sounds you would not have picked. phrz does not stop at the draw: it chops what it drew and arranges it into a phrase, so you hear an idea right away.

random chops land where you would not have cut — the middle of a word, the tail of a chord — and some of those are the ones you keep.

how it works

1. draw sounds

press new sounds: phrz pulls public-domain (cc0) sounds at random. you can set how long the drawn sounds should be. or drop in up to 24 of your own audio files — each one becomes its own layer.

2. press play

phrz cuts every sound into pieces and places them on a grid to make a phrase. the pieces are brought into one key.

3. press new phrase

same sounds, new cuts, new rhythm. keep going until one lands, then export it as wav. not the sounds you wanted? draw again.

four ways to cut

phrz is a random sample chopper, too. in core, each sound gets one of these at random. with pro, you choose.

overlap pieces from random spots, at random lengths. they can overlap.

divide equal pieces, end to end.

transient a new piece wherever a new note or hit begins.

random each sound picks one of the three.

random, but in key

the sounds do not have to match. phrz listens to the harmony in each sound and brings the pieces into key with each other.

with pro, you can lock a layer you like and keep re-rolling the rest.

questions

is there a free random sample generator for music? yes. phrz's core is free and runs in your browser — nothing to install, no account.

can i use it to make beats? yes. phrz turns the random samples into a phrase on a grid, in one key — a starting point for a beat. export it as wav and build the drums and the rest in your daw.

where do the random sounds come from? public-domain (cc0) sounds, drawn at random. you can also drop in your own samples, up to 24.

how is this different from getting one random sample? phrz does not stop at the draw. it chops the sounds it drew and arranges them into a phrase, so you hear an idea right away.

will the random chops be in key? phrz listens to the harmony in each sound and shifts the pieces into one key, so they fit together.

can i take the result into my daw? export the phrase as wav. with pro, export every audible layer as its own stem, all starting together and running the same length.

how is this different from chppr? chppr, by the same maker, is for chopping by hand: you set the slices and play them on pads. phrz decides the cuts and where they go, at random.
