phrz

samplette alternative

samplette is a great way to dig: it plays a random record and you listen for something to sample. phrz starts from the other end. it draws random public-domain (cc0) sounds — or takes your own — and chops them into a phrase, in key, at your bpm.

dig, or build?

samplette helps you find music. it plays one random track at a time, from youtube, so you can listen and decide what to sample.

phrz helps you make something from sounds right away. press new sounds and phrz pulls random public-domain (cc0) sounds. press play and it cuts them, places the pieces on a grid, and brings them into one key.

so the two fit different moments: samplette for discovering records, phrz for turning random sounds into a starting point for a beat.

how it works

1. draw sounds

press new sounds: phrz pulls public-domain (cc0) sounds at random. or drop in up to 24 of your own samples — each one becomes its own layer.

2. set the bpm and press play

phrz chops every sound into pieces and places them on a grid at your bpm. the pieces are brought into one key.

3. press new phrase

same sounds, new cuts, new rhythm. keep going until one lands, then export it as wav. not the sounds you wanted? draw again.

questions

is there a free samplette alternative? phrz's core is free and runs in your browser — nothing to install, no account. it does a different job: it turns random sounds into a phrase instead of playing a record.

where do phrz's random sounds come from? public-domain (cc0) sounds, drawn at random. you can also drop in your own samples, up to 24.

is phrz a random sample finder? in a way. it finds random sounds for you, then goes one step further: it chops them and arranges the pieces into a phrase you can hear right away.

will the result be in key and on tempo? yes. phrz listens to the harmony in each sound and shifts the pieces into one key, and places them on a grid at the bpm you set.

can i use samples i found elsewhere? yes. drop in your own audio files, up to 24. each one becomes its own layer.

can i take the result into my daw? export the phrase as wav and drop it into ableton, logic, fl studio or any daw. with pro, export every audible layer as its own stem.
