01the screen
The circle and the main buttons are on the left; the settings are on the right.
- the circle
- each ring is one layer.
- bpm · key
- the line under the circle. Opens the song key (auto, refresh, major / minor, root) and pitch, which shifts everything by up to 24 semitones. Play, stop and tempo follow your DAW.
- the right side
- shape, audio, visual and output, then the details: layers, structure, cut, rhythm, pitch, fx and map.
- undo · redo · history
- go back, go forward, and see what you did.
- ≡
- save and open, second screen, the MIDI map, error log and settings.
02drawing and keeping phrases
new phrase is the main button. Press it until you hear something you like, then keep it. Each button redraws some things and keeps the rest:
- new phrase
- keeps the sounds, key and tempo and draws the next phrase. While playing, a long press switches at the end of the current phrase; long-press again to cancel.
- style
- the menu next to new phrase. Sets the mood of the next draw: normal starts from the default settings, keep keeps your settings and only redraws the arrangement, and mix, groove, sparse, glitch, drift and raw each draw in their own direction. Choosing one does not change the sound yet.
- new sounds
- swaps in new sounds and draws a new phrase with them. Layers on hold keep their sound.
- add sounds
- adds sounds and leaves the phrase as it is.
- hold ○ / ●
- in layers. Keeps that layer through the next draw.
- keep
- saves the phrase you hear, up to four. Press it again on the same phrase to let it go.
- 1 – 4
- call a kept phrase. While playing, tap to switch at the next bar, long-press to switch at the next phrase. × lets it go.
A kept phrase plays in the current song key, pitch and tempo.
03sounds you can use
phrz cuts up whatever sounds you give it. Add them in audio:
- your own
- drop files onto audio from Finder / Explorer or your DAW, or click browse files.
- draw from
- choose cc0, folders or pure, set how many, then press new sounds to replace your sounds or add sounds to add to them.
- cc0
- sounds published as CC0. sample types picks the kinds (piano, drums, bass and more); seconds limits how long the original sounds are.
- folders
- folders you register with add folder.
- pure
- tones built into phrz.
- files
- the list of your sounds. Set each sound's key to auto, off, major / minor or a root.
WAV, AIFF, MP3, M4A, FLAC, OGG and Opus. Up to 24 sounds at a time.
What you can do with sounds and what you make is under support.
04shape
Four knobs that move many detailed settings at once. When the details no longer match a knob, it shows mixed. reset goes back to the defaults.
- density
- how full every layer is.
- breaks
- how much of the phrase rests.
- size
- the length of the slices. Further right, longer slices.
- pitch
- how much each slice's pitch moves (movement, continuity and independence in the pitch section). Not the pitch that shifts the whole song.
05each layer
layers lists every layer, eight to a page.
- volume
- the layer's level. Double-click for 0 dB.
- m · s
- mute and solo. Hold s for a solo that lasts only while you hold it.
- hold ○ / ●
- keeps the layer through the next draw.
- choke
- when on, each new slice cuts off the one before it. When off, they ring over each other.
- the name
- hear plays the sound; remove takes it out.
06the details
The sections under the right side show what phrz decided, one setting at a time, and let you change it.
- structure
- per layer: pattern (scatter, even, bunched), density (how busy) and chance (the odds a slice plays). randomize redraws the one you have selected for every layer; randomize all redraws all three.
- cut
- how sounds are cut: transient (at the attacks), divide (equal slices), overlap (from anywhere) or random (picked per sound). fade in and fade out shape the start and end of each slice.
- rhythm
- resolution (how finely a bar is split), phrase length (in bars), phrase offset (where the phrase starts), on beat (how strongly slices lean toward the beats) and breaks.
- pitch
- how each slice's pitch moves: movement (how much), continuity and independence (how it moves). While movement is at 0, the other two do nothing.
- map
- every layer's waveform, its cuts and the slices in use.
07effects (fx)
fx shows the effects placed in the phrase, four bars at a time (◀ ▶ turns the page).
- on · off
- turns every effect on or off. off keeps where they are; on brings them back.
- density
- how many effects are placed.
- dry / wet
- the balance between the original sound and the effect.
- a step
- click one to change its type, which sounds it hits (targets) and its length. erase removes it.
- randomize · clear
- redraw every effect, or clear them all.
08pictures
Add images or a video in visual and phrz cuts them in time with the phrase.
- adding
- drop images or a video, or click browse files. Any number of images, or one video.
- patterns
- core for the basic set, all for every effect.
- background
- white or black.
- composition · accent
- turn each way of cutting and each overlaid effect on or off. accent share sets how often accents appear.
- second screen
- ≡ > screen > second screen shows the picture alone in its own window. fill fills it; square keeps it square.
09drag to a track
Take what phrz is playing into your DAW as audio. Click a drag button once; phrz prepares the file while the music keeps going. When the button changes to ready, drag it onto a track.
- drag wav
- the current phrase as one WAV (wav ready)
- drag stems
- one WAV per layer, dropped together (stems ready)
The length switch next to the buttons chooses loop (exact bars, loops cleanly) or with tail (lets the last sounds ring out).
10export to files
In output, export to files instead of dragging.
- length
- loop (exact bars, with the tail folded back to the start) or with tail (the last sounds ring out). Also used by the drag buttons and mp4.
- loops
- how many times the phrase repeats: 1, 2, 4 or 8.
- wav
- the mix as one WAV.
- stems
- the mix and every layer as WAVs, in one ZIP.
- mp4
- in video: picture and sound as a video, sized for Reels, TikTok, Shorts or X. On Mac it needs macOS 15 or later.
- master
- voices caps how many slices play at once; compressor holds the mix together.
11control with MIDI
phrz takes MIDI notes and controller knobs. Turn it on or off with the MIDI control switch in phrz (on by default). The same map is listed in the plugin.
notes
| note | what happens |
|---|
C1–D#1 | recall keep 1–4 |
E1 | keep the current phrase |
F1 | undo |
F#1 | new sounds |
C2 | new phrase |
D2 | redraw only where it hits |
E2 | reorder only |
F2 | re-cut only |
Notes act the moment they are played. Put them in a MIDI clip and the phrase switches at that point in the song.
knobs
Map these to your controller with your DAW's MIDI mapping. The moves are recorded as automation.
- global pitch
- pitch movement and pitch independence
- fade in and fade out
- hold
- voices
- mute and solo of each of the 24 layers
12save and open
Save a session as a .phrz file and open it later.
- ≡ > save > to this device
- saves a .phrz.
- ≡ > open > from this device
- opens a .phrz. phrz asks before it replaces the current session.
