phrz

what's new

  • New: new phrase now has a style next to it — normal, mix, groove, sparse, glitch, drift and raw. Pick one and it applies from the next new phrase.
  • New: draw from now includes pure — 29 sounds built into phrz, free for everyone.
  • New: the visual background can be white or black (visual section). It also applies to exported video.
  • Changed: pitch movement now stays inside the key's scale, moving to nearer notes first.
  • Changed: the phone layout now matches the desktop (sections, files and the fx sheet).
  • Changed: a new phrz icon.
  • Fixed: moving the phrase offset knob did nothing until the next rebuild. It now rebuilds the phrase from the next tick.
  • Fixed: on iPhone, phrz could close itself after pressing new phrase or new sounds while playing.
  • Fixed: when adding sounds from a folder with new sounds, files that could not be read were skipped silently. phrz now tells you.

  • New: AIFF files now load in every browser, including Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and on Windows.
  • New: open an image cut in vrbld straight into phrz's visual.

  • Changed: key detection is v2 only. classic can no longer be chosen, and saved sets also open with v2.
  • Changed: new sounds keeps each lane's settings when the sounds change.
  • Fixed: exporting mp4 could stop on Safari.
  • Fixed: the drawing of fx steps such as stutter was out of step with the beats being played.
  • Fixed: the visual stopped moving while a large video was being prepared.

  • News: two new free tools from nok — kyft fits sounds into one key, and vrbld cuts up and rebuilds images.
  • New: on Safari and iPhone, large videos up to a minute now play from a lighter copy.
  • Fixed: the library getting cut off, parts of the screen hiding when phrz is on the home screen, and buttons that were hard to see.

  • Changed: key detection uses a new engine (v2). The previous one is still available as classic in audio.
  • Changed: keep (pro) now uses one key and tempo for the whole song.
  • Fixed: layout glitches in the new screen, and issues with keep and the playback position.

  • Changed: a new layout. Sections are now tabs next to the circle (on phones they open from the bottom), and save, open and what's new live in the ≡ menu.
  • New: the playback position (bar.beat / bars) next to the tempo.
  • Changed: in structure, the first table is now called pattern, and each of pattern, density and chance has an all row.
  • Fixed: on core, the first random replace or add could show the pro panel even though drawing from cc0 is free. It now starts from cc0.

  • New (pro): on beat — pulls hits toward beats 1·2·3·4. At 0% your phrases sound exactly as before.
  • New (pro): keep — keep up to 4 phrases you like and switch between them. Tap a number to switch on the next bar, or hold it to switch at the top of the next loop.
  • Fixed: playback could stay silent when the browser had paused audio before the first play.
  • Fixed: changing a lane's mute or volume could delay the next phrase change by a bar.
  • Changed: the browser tab now shows just “phrz”.

  • News: the phrz plugin waitlist is open — sign up at nokbeats.com/tools/phrz/plugin.

  • New (pro): layer volume — a fader on each row in layers. It works on top of the automatic volume and pan, and stays when you roll new phrases. reset params puts it back to 0 dB.

  • Released: phrz is officially out.
  • Fixed: with hold at 0 and a long fade in, the end of a fragment was cut off in 3 ms. The last tenth of each fragment now fades out.
